1996 gründete der Dirigent Pieter Jan Leusink das Bach Orchestra of the Netherlands, das aus Musikern besteht, die sich auf die Aufführung von Barockmusik spezialisiert haben. Die leidenschaftlichen Musiker spielen auf authentischen Instrumenten aus dieser Stilepoche, was zu einer spezifischen Klangfarbe des Barockorchesters führt. Die Stimmung des Orchesters ist einen Halbton tiefer als die eines modernen Orchesters: A=415Hz anstelle von A=440Hz.
Bei Aufführungen von Mozarts Requiem beispielsweise werden auch authentische Instrumente aus der klassischen Zeit gespielt. Die Stimmung ist A=430Hz. Der Dirigent Pieter Jan Leusink und seine Musiker sind ständig auf der Suche nach der ultimativen Interpretation von Bachs Kompositionen im Besonderen. Die traditionellen Aufführungen von Bachs Matthäuspassion sind mit jährlich 40.000 Besuchern die meistbesuchten in den Niederlanden.
Im Jahr 2006 wurde das Orchester durch einen professionellen Chor ergänzt: Der Bach-Choir of the Netherlands. Es ist das einzige Barockensemble in den Niederlanden, das mit fester Besetzung arbeitet und sich auf diese Weise zu einem der führenden Chöre in der internationalen Aufführungspraxis Alter Musik entwickelt hat. Mit mehr als 80 Konzerten pro Jahr ist der Bach Choir and Orchestra of the Netherlands unter der Leitung von Pieter Jan Leusink zu einem wichtigen Anbieter von klassischen Konzerten in der niederländischen Musikwelt geworden.
Die enorme Flexibilität der Musiker trägt zur großen Differenziertheit des Programms bei. Bachs Matthäuspassion geht mühelos in Mozarts Requiem über, und dieselbe Flexibilität zeigt sich musikalisch sowohl in Allegris weltberühmtem Misereri mei als auch in Faurés Requiem.
Bei den Konzerten ist ein großes Engagement der Musiker zu beobachten, das für funkelnde Darbietungen voller Emotionen und Spiritualität und für eine beispiellose Treue zu den vorgetragenen Kompositionen sorgt. In 2006 werd aan het orkest een professioneel koor toegevoegd: The Bach Choir of the Netherlands. In Nederland is dit het enige barokgezelschap dat met een vaste bezetting werkt en op deze manier is uitgegroeid tot een van de toonaangevende koren in de internationale uitvoeringspraktijk van oude muziek. Met jaarlijks ruim 80 concerten is The Bach Choir & Orchestra of the Netherlands o.l.v. dirigent Pieter Jan Leusink een belangrijke aanbieder van klassieke concerten geworden in de Nederlandse muziekwereld.
De enorme flexibiliteit van zowel musici als zangers draagt bij aan de grote differentiatie in de programmering. Van Bachs Matthäus Passion wordt moeiteloos overgeschakeld naar Mozarts Requiem en bij zowel het wereldberoemde Misereri mei van Allegri als Fauré’s Requiem wordt muzikaal dezelfde souplesse getoond.
Tijdens de concerten is een grote betrokkenheid van de musici en zangers zichtbaar die zorgen voor uitvoeringen die sprankelend zijn, vol emotie en spiritualiteit en met een ongekende loyaliteit aan de composities die worden vertolkt.
